Is it Really Possible to Have Another Civil War?

One of the biggest topics of discussion related to survival and SHTF preparedness is how to cope with a societal collapse.  However, it may be time to start thinking of another terrifying possibility:  That we could be on the verge of another civil war.  If we take a closer look at some of the signs that seem to be pointing in that direction, it becomes clearer that this is more than just a crazy conspiracy theory.

Pieces of a Puzzle

ORCivilWar

Over the past decade, this country has become increasingly-divided to the point where fault lines are now a permanent fixture on our national landscape.  We have been bombarded with attention-getting headlines and a chorus of voices that do more to incite and fuel discord than they report news.  People are being divided and marginalized into groups, and we are also becoming more isolated from each other.  We are struggling economically, our political system is in a state of disarray, and everyone wants to find someone to blame.

At the same time that we’re becoming more distrustful of each other while being exposed to the hypnotic mantra of biased and sensationalist news reporting.  We are also losing our rights and freedoms as the government continues to expand their reach into our daily lives.  At the same time, we are seeing an unprecedented militarization of our police force while demonstrations and protests are becoming more frequent and violent.

All of these pieces are out there, and it won’t take much to have them converge or erupt into an all-out conflict.  We just need to look at places like Venezuela to see how quickly things can devolve from a prosperous, productive, diverse and democratic society into total chaos.  Now as people are recognizing that their government is not trustworthy, they are forming factions that have the chance of tearing the country apart.  We’re not that far off from having the same thing happen here.

How it Can Start

There are a few different ways in which a civil war could hit the country.  First, conflict could revolve around religion or political ideology.  Another option is that civil unrest becomes such a problem that the government instills martial law that is met with sustained resistance from different groups.  Finally, it can be a class or race-based conflict that is fueled by hateful rhetoric, economic inequality or a general dislike for a group of people that the government either provokes or cannot contain.

No matter how it unfolds, it will be a challenge and a threat that none of us have ever had to contend with.  It would be not only a SHTF situation in the practical sense of the word, but it would be mixed with a war in which we would have to choose sides or find a way to survive if we try to avoid getting involved.  It’s a scary proposition, and one that probably would not even be entertained by crazy conspiracy theorists out there.

However, things have devolved so quickly in our society that what was once unimaginable is now a very real possibility.  Think about how an all-out civil war or insurrection would have an immediate, devastating and lasting impact on our way of life.  Then, think about how such a possibility would impact your SHTF preparedness and planning.  Chances are that some big changes will be necessary in order to accommodate this contingency.  Are you prepared?
